Poe Dameron and Kaydel Ko Connix deleted scene from Star Wars The Last Jedi

Oh, you mean a shit ton of Resistance fighters would have died on D’Qar if not for Poe’s so-called stunt? U know what’s funny is I already knew that FROM THE TEXT OF THE FILM but I seem to be in the minority on that. SO WEIRD.

OH, YOU MEAN THAT ONCE AGAIN, POE “DON’T PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER JUST TO TAKE THE HEAT OFF ME” DAMERON FULLY INTENDED TO BE THE ONLY CASUALTY OF THE RESISTANCE THAT DAY?

YOU MEAN POE “TRICKS HIS DROID INTO THE LAST ESCAPE POD AND SPACES HIMSELF BECAUSE BB-8’S SENTIENCE IS WORTH MORE TO HIM THAN HIS OWN LIFE” DAMERON WAS THE ~SOLE X-WING UP AGAINST A DREADNOUGHT ON A SUICIDE MISSION~ NOT BECAUSE HE WANTED GLORY BUT BECAUSE HE KNEW SACRIFICING HIMSELF MIGHT SAVE THE WHOLE FLEET?

AND DIDN’T NEED TO BE POORLY TAUGHT THAT BY A SHITTY GLORYHOUND SKETCHY “LEADER” WHO DIDN’T ACTUALLY GET IN FRONT OF THE FLEET, BUT RATHER WAITED UNTIL 99% OF THE RESISTANCE HAD DIED BEFORE MAKING THE SPLASHIEST MOVE THEY COULD?

YOU MEAN POE “I JUST WANT MY PARENTS’ SACRIFICES TO HAVE BEEN WORTH IT” DAMERON WAS LITERALLY ONLY IGNORING *LEIA’S ORDER TO SAVE HIMSELF* – AND EVERY BOMBER PILOT WAS INDIVIDUALLY IGNORING LEIA’S RETURN ORDERS IN A BID TO SUPPORT POE AS A TRUSTED FRIEND, NOT AS A LEADER SENDING THEM TO THEIR DEATHS?

YOU DON’T SAY!!!

Poe Stans who have been saying this all along:

Here’s the thing about the deleted scenes in The Last Jedi: there are at least three that throw wrenches into the movie’s basic narrative.

Again, I’ve only seen the movie once (aka, it’s tied with the Holiday Special), and I think I’ve only actually watched one deleted scene, but here is my assessment:

The Rey-and-the-Pirates scene (the one I saw) builds a little more of a bond with Luke and also suggests that he approves of Rey charging headlong into danger. Rian has given excuses for cutting the scene, but if it had been included, it might have been more awkward that this didn’t come up when Luke and Rey fight…her determination to go and help people in need, and Luke telling her that this is what they need.

But the other two are far more unsettling.

The first, I discussed in another post: they cut the scene of Finn seeing the Rey hologram because it would have given a concrete reason for him to abandon the fleet, in that he was taking the beacon so Rey wouldn’t return to a doomed vessel. By cutting that scene, they made it seem like he was just being selfish…which was necessary for the “development” he was left with after all of the cuts.

The second, obviously, is this scene. If Poe has reason to fly out there and delay the First Order, and it’s established that the bombers were already scrambled to help buy time, then it doesn’t seem like he just came up with a sudden bold plan to get a lot of people killed. He’s a warrior, he’s doing what he can to protect people.

By eliminating the clear motivation of a character from the start, you can leave their motives up to interpretation: if you cut the scene where Ariel sings about how much she wants to live with humans on the land and explore their world, then it just seems like she was willing to give everything up for a handsome prince (and yes, I do think the movie would have benefited from Oscar Isaac singing a song about how he just wants to protect people and keep the spark of rebellion alive). The fact that it had to be trimmed and adjusted in this way just to keep a consistent narrative shows that the writing had a lot of flaws holistically, and that it wanted to send a message, not to tell a story.

“The fact that it had to be trimmed and adjusted in this way just to keep a consistent narrative shows that the writing had a lot of flaws holistically, and that it wanted to send a message, not to tell a story.”

Basically. It’s nailing the issue so well.
