It’s imbalanced, so given that we are half the cinema-going public, we are half the people [who] watch drama or watch anything else, where is that? So yes, I think the pay is a huge thing, but I’m actually more concerned over the lack of our voices being heard.

What makes you angry?
There is absolutely no reason for a man to be paid more than a woman while doing the same job. I feel really strongly about it. I’ve seen first-hand through friends, that is rife across all sectors.

I like playing the social convention. If you’re in a period drama, there’s always something dancing underneath the surface as a human – but then you always have to conform to the social conventions around you, and those two things get to be juxtaposed against each other. You’re being human, but you’re trapped within the social convention of the time.

Hope makes people good, a lot of the time. You hope for a brighter future, and resentment is outweighed.
