I know it’s fun thinking that everyone knows Kara Danvers is really Supergirl, but
I think no one really knows. I mean, the glasses are kinda lame yeah (and the scar is a dead giveaway but that’s a Melissa benoist thing so I’ll let it go), but change in face shape with glasses aside,
there’s really something to be said for the change in mannerisms. Trust me, that’s a huge disguise. People won’t notice the mild mannered person. And especially because Kara’s alter ego has really developed by the time she becomes a reporter in the public eye. When she’s supergirl, her voice drops. She stands taller. The colors she wears are bolder. Even her smile is different. She speaks in clipped sentences. She doesn’t really laugh the same, if she laughs at all.
But preamble rant aside, the real headcanon starts here is that a whole lot of young kids actually know it’s her. She saves them and I firmly believe she always stays with them until their parents can reach them, and then usually stays another couple minutes to chat and make sure they’re okay and not freaking out, does a free x ray to tell them to get medical attention or not, uses her freeze breath ever so gently so calm their burns if it was a fire, tousles their hair (or braids it if they want it cause her braids are hella amazing) and tells them a bad joke or about how much she loves her sister or misses her planet or how her cousin is a huge nerd if they need the cheering up. And it’s only then,
when she drops the supergirl act because they don’t need a super powered hero, they just need a person, that the kids recognize her. Well, they see her. And then she’s out getting coffee or whatever and sees a kid she saved looking healthy and happy and she gets the biggest goofy grin and they see her and their eyes just light up because they see her again. And she’ll wave a put a finger over her lips and they’ll smile and wave and keep her secret and it’ll feel like the coolest secret club ever (because it is), even if their parents are wondering why the heck their kid seems to know that reporter, and Kara will go on her way with a little bounce in her step and no one usually knows why except Alex, who always smiles and says nothing, and James and Winn, who grin and tease her for it, and J’onn, who always knows before she does and smiles too.
And then one day she’s chasing down a lead with snapper and she has one of these interactions and snapper sees it and suddenly puts it together, and just shakes his head and goes “eyes on the prize, ponytail, you may be able to save those kids but you still have to write a good story about it,” and she’s spluttering but he just tells her as long as she’s able to do both jobs and she doesn’t quote herself anymore it really isn’t a problem
And she’s out with Cat a couple times to catch up and it happens each time and Cat already knows but can’t keep her mouth shut the last time it happens and finally says, “I’ll start calling you Kiera again if you want to pretend you aren’t her anymore, but honestly Kara, I thought you were past hiding this from me,” and Kara just sighs this time and is finally able to talk to her about how much the mentor ship meant to her
And it happens with her “bff” Lena all the freaking time and Lena never puts it together. Never. Because Kara Danvers is already her hero, and she’s visited the children’s hospital with her a bunch of times already and written some articles about it, so why shouldn’t these kids love her girl as much as she does?
And when it happens with Eliza her foster mother smiles wide and kisses the side of her head and tells her, again, how proud of her she is and how good of a job she’s doing
And when it happens with Clark he’s stunned, because it happens so often with her, and it so rarely happens with him
When you can not stand how beautiful your crush is and all you do is smile a lot
also consider: hopeless lesbians dumbass lena luthor proposing 2 kara after she thought they were dating for like 3 years only to find out that kara was saying girlfriend in the straight girl way the entire goddamn time
lena, on one knee: will u, kara danvers, ma-
kara: A BEST FRIEND RING LENA YOU SHOULDNT HAVE
honestly I see so many jokes about how lena constantly says she can always tell when Kara is lying and that she’s horrible at keeping secrets from her but the thing that’s tragic is that lena is actually pretty damn good at spotting what Kara’s feeling, even when she doesn’t know the actual details. it’s part of what makes them such good friends– they’re emotionally honest with each other.
so even if she doesn’t know that Kara is supergirl she probably knows when Kara is lying. And that’s why she always brings it up, she doesn’t know what it’s about but she knows that it’s happening. And can you imagine little 13 year old lena, watching her beloved big brother slowly descend into madness and she knows something is horribly horribly wrong, but she has no idea what and everyone tells her she’s imagining things, that everything is fine?
she’s never been more upset to discover she’s right.
lena may not know that Kara is supergirl but she does know that Kara is lying to her. except, Kara’s not lex–shes the best person she knows. and she’s not lying to any of her other friends or her sister, so it’s just to lena–she can’t fault Kara for that. she’s trying, but she’s a luthor after all. if the most moral person she’s ever met doesn’t trust her then maybe she shouldn’t be trusted.
