How BBC Sherlock defines the antithesis of Sherlock Holmes
There are a lot of reasons why you might say that S4 is the antithesis of Sherlock Holmes. You might also say that none of those reasons inspire you to believe that grievous wrong was done just so that it might be righted in the next series.
You might say S4 felt less like an argument and more like a load of nonsense.
But, if we can find the pattern within the apparent nonsense of S4, and if we can decode the argument contained within that pattern, we can:
be far more confident in our assumption that they are following Yorke’s model, with all its implications for symmetry, fractal structure, and most crucially, how S5 will ‘synthesize’ and resolve the previous four, and
be equally confident in our interpretation of what the argument of the show is, because we have identified it on the deepest structural level possible.
In other words: successfully decrypting a code (the show) confirms both the cipher (Yorke’s book) and the message (TJLC).
So. Is the show really making an intelligible argument within this framework? What does the show say are the two opposites? What is the message?
What is the antithesis of Sherlock Holmes? How exactly has everyone been getting it wrong?
when Sherlock says “but you know, he’s a romantic” and in 0.5 seconds his face conveys this fully realized bitterness and regret that he did not get to experience John’s romantic nature in full…. fuuuuuuuuckk kkkk
hopkins falls asleep on the couch with toby the cat on her chest and molly snapchats it to sherlock, who replies with a video of john snoring in his chair in front of the fire with gladstone the bulldog in his lap
ok but for Real the worst thing about that conversation is that sherlock starts to tell john that john is that person for him, you are doing yourself a disservice, i have known many people but made few friends and i can safely say that you– and that’s when john interrupts with his confession of guilt. because john thinks he isn’t good enough to be that person for sherlock and he needs sherlock to know it.
he doesn’t say all that about cheating and wanting more and still wanting more and wanting to be better because he didn’t hear what sherlock was trying to say. he says all that because he did, and john hates himself too much to hear someone he loves say that he is the person they have. because sherlock deserves better.
john doesn’t want to be what sherlock has, because john thinks he isn’t enough. and in the end sherlock basically says, i know who you are, and i know that’s what you think. but neither of us is perfect, and it’s you anyway.
there I was, hoping and asking that the scripts would be released and emerge some day, and then suddenly they indeed appear. not all of them, but still. thank you, universe, or whoever released them.
